How does ARGOS work ?

The ARGOS/KINEIS system is a satellite-based system that collects and distributes environmental data from platforms around the world.

  1. Devices equipped with ARGOS/KINEIS-certified transmitters (called Platform Transmitter Terminals or PTTs) are deployed. These transmitters send out radio signals at specific frequencies.
  2. Argos utilizes a constellation of polar-orbiting, low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. As these satellites pass overhead, they receive the signals transmitted from the PTTs.
  3. The satellites record the data contained in the signals, including the transmitter’s ID and data. The satellites then transmit this collected data to a network of ground receiving stations.
  4. A global network of ground stations receives the data transmitted by the satellites. These stations then forward the data to processing centers.
  5. This data is then made available in .csv to users through the ARGOS WEB online platform.
